Chat with the Vegas Insider Handicappers at 3:30pm EST
Q: Lawrence Onley(Forestville,MD) Mr. Edwards, its ah pleasure to be talking to an apparent successful Vegas Handicapper. My question to you is in regard to my near winnings I seem to keep missing by a half ah point,or when it comes to my parleys, I also miss them by a game or two. My guess is that I may be betting on too many games trying to get a big paycheck, what advice would you give me in regard to my strategy. R: briane Good afternoon ladies and gents, Week 1 lines for college football were release by Las Vegas Sports Consultatns today, so let's discuss along with a stacked MLB slate and UFC 101: Declaration tomorrow night at Wachovia Center in Philadelphia. Lawrence: If you have a parlays-only strategy, you aren't going to cash too many winners. My advice on parlays is to either never play 'em or just play 'em for shouts and giggles for very small amounts (at least compared to your other straight wagers). And certainly, the more teams you have in the parlays, the less chance you have to cash 'em. Q: montreal taking yankees to win it all what u think? R: briane I think you have a good shot and at 4/1 odds (per Sportsbook.com's current future numbers), it's pretty good value. Obviously, the Red Sox are struggling right now but with Beckett and Lester at the top of that rotation, they are still going to be a tough out in the playoffs. And the Phillies (+700) and Dodgers (+400) are also capable of winning the Fall Classic. We'll see what happens... Q: Fayetteville Brian, What is steaming on your plate today? R: briane Phillies run line looks tasty for plus-150 payout. Quick Thought: LOVE watching all these wide-right missed FG's by FSU on College Football Live's special airing now on the state of Florida. Quick Thought II: What a joke for ESPN to spell Wilber Marshall's name wrong on the ticker when listing UF's All-Americans. That's a borderline crime! Q: Ted Really like the Rex Sox tonight. Any thoughts please? Josh Becketts will have a big night, imo. R: briane Agree, Beckett as an underdog is an automatic play in my opinion. Q: Chuck (san diego) Hi brian, thanks for being here. i like mazzano tonight, think oakland (ml +125) is a delicious bet. Oakland has not been a great road team but the lineup is clicking since the All Star break. do you like my chance here? R: briane I'm not backing KC tonight but I would lean its way -- Bannister has been solid all season long. Q: Bob Morse Yo Brian, how is it going? My man Marc Lawrence is liking Colorado on ML. Jimenez enters tonight's contest with wins in 12 of his last 18 home team starts. He's also in terrific KW form with 4 walks and 17 strikeouts in his last three starts. Done deal or what here? R: briane I think we're all interested to see what Zambrano looks like after leaving his last start with tightness in his back. But I'm not in a hurry to lay a fairly expensive price with the Rockies tonight. I passed on the game. Not trying to talk you out of it, though. Good luck! Q: John (Atlanta) Brian, awesome night to bet on bases. I like home teams Philly, Kansas City tonight. What are your thoughts please? any totals that you are on? Take care buddy. R: briane Real high on Philly, not against the KC play, either. I have 'under' for Yanks-Sox on my radar but haven't pulled the trigger quite yet. And the 'over' is on a 14-1-1 run for the Angels, so that could be worth a look although Texas 'unders' have been equally lucrative. But Saunders has been slapped around hard by the Rangers this year. Q: Jimmy NFL preseason. Tennessee opens as 3-pt home favorite. I like them in this spot. Thoughts? R: briane I don't bet pre-season games in any sport ever. Q: Terrence (UFCfanfromPhilly) My first UFC event tomorrow night -- fired up as hell! What do you think about Silva and Griffin and the Florida-Penn fights? R: briane Terrence: You are in for the time of your life! I've only been to one UFC event (UFC 88 in Atlanta), but it was AWESOME! Now my all-access press pass and great seats on press row didn't hurt, but you'll love it regardless of your seats. I think Forrest Griffin is certainly worth a shot at plus-300 odds. Bottom Line: If Silva isn't ready and doesn't bring his A-Game (like his last two so-so performances), he's going down. Now I think we all give Anderson Silva the edge in quickness, technique, etc., but you can't measure Forrest Griffin's ticker. That dude is all about heart and he LOVES to fight. And make no mistake, he will bring his A-Game. Silva better be ready or Griffin is going to pull another stunner like his previous upset wins over the likes of Rampage Jackson and Shogun Rua. As for the Penn-Florian fight, I like Penn a bunch BUT the minus-230 price (risk $230 to win $100) is too expensive. Penn will win but I don't like to risk prices like that -- reward not worth the risk, you get burned too often betting like that in the long run. Now if your book allows a parlay for UFC, definitely put Penn in your parlay. Check out Steve Cofied, the Cage Writer, on Yahoo! Sports -- his MMA blog gives his picks and he's been money in 2009. Q: John (Athens) What's that Dawgs line looking like at okie-state? Any other Week 1 lines look tasty? R: briane LVSC opened Ok St. -4.5. The one game that I LOVE, although I don't think the books will keep it this high, is Nevada +17 at Notre Dame. Colin Kaepernick and Co. have a chance to pull the outright upset in my opinion. Allright, folks. Thanks for being here, enjoyed it as always. If you want to tune in for some college football convo on the Week 1 lines, I'll be a guest on the Paul Finebaum Show at 4:30 Eastern. You can tune in by clicking here. Good luck with your wagers this weekend! --Brian Edwards |
