Q: jim kallas pittsburgh pa hi brian i need a winner satim thinking taking penn state -27 is it a good bet R: briane Good afternoon ladies, gents and degenerates. Hell yeah, college football is here so let's get to it. (And sorry I'm a few minutes late, I'll stay a lot of minutes late to make up for it.) Jimbo: With big numbers like that, I either look underdog or stay away, especially in Week 1. No strong opinion whatsoever and sorry for being a fence sitter. Here's you a winner, though. Check out Nevada with Colin Kaepernick running the Pistol offense. Nice double-digit 'dog that I think will be in the game and have a chance to win outright in the fourth quarter. Remember, the last time the Irish played in South Bend, they lost to an abysmal Syracuse team with a lame-duck coach. Q: san antonio is oakland going to win R: briane A's tonight? Sorry my man, I'm all about pigskin right now and haven't even considered or had a milli-second to look at the MLB card. Q: Jerry(San Diego) NFL Reg. Season Wins. Detroit 4.5.....the over should be the pick right? I mean, all the lions need to do is like win 1 game a month??? Tampa Bay 6.5 the Bucs should easily win 7 games. they still got the good D. am i right with the 2 picks Mr. Edwards. Thanks. R: briane Jerry: I'm ok with the Detroit 'over' but don't see it with the Bucs at all. In fact, I think the Bucs are more likely 4-12 or 5-11. 6-10 is their ceiling in my opinion. Back to the Lions....love this nugget from Bryan Leonard at the VI Handicapping Seminar a few weeks back: Detroit has five foes this year that will be coming off playing on Monday night. For the record, I'm not on Detroit's 'over,' but I would go that way if I had to (I don't) pick something for their season win total. One total I do like in NFL is Eagles 'over' 9.5, assuming you don't have to pay a super-chalky price. Here's a couple of college win totals I like: Ga Tech 'over' 8.5 and plus-600ish to win the ACC. Also like 'Bama 'over' 9 wins and ND 'under' 9 wins. Go get 'em! Q: Tyler: Muncie For sat college football what 4 teams do you like for a 4 team parley R: briane Before I forget, if you have an ESPN Insider subscription, go check out Chad Millman's sports betting blog today. He uses a few quotes of mine and expresses admiration for my beer-coozy savvy. So Tyler, you just want to give away my four best picks for the weekend? C'mon bro, you want me eating mayo sandwiches in October? I do this for a living. Please check out my pick pack if you wish. Another quick note: Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting that Georgia QB Joe Cox has been suffering from flu-like symptoms the last 48 hours. However, he's stil expected to start in Stillwater tomorrow. Other quick injury notes from the week if you missed 'em: Oklahoma stud TE Gresham out vs. BYU, Oklahoma St. LB Orie Lemon (2nd leading tackler LY) done for the year with ACL and 'Bama starting DE Deadrick cleared to play and practice y-day after being shot Monday in botched robbery attempt. P.S. to Tyler, I'll give away one more play from pick pack before this chat is over... Q: Eric Chiu Hello Brian, thanks for being here. I only bet college football and I like the underdog (Tulane) tonight catching 2 TDs. Whats your take on this game please? Take care R: briane Plenty of opinions for Tulsa-Tulane in this preview. Lots of money to be made with the purchase of my pay-if-it-wins-only selection for this contest! My guarantee last night was the never-a-doubt thunder 'under' (47) in South Carolina's 7-3 win over N.C. St. Q: Nigel (virginia beach) Hey brian thanks for being here, Im thinking about taking navy, san jose st, and georgia ats, what do you think? R: briane Little concerned about UGA with Cox suffering from the flu. Assuming he's 100 percent tomorrow (I don't think that can be assumed at this point), my lean is to the Dawgs. In fact, they could be a live 'dog to win outright (think South Carolina last night) for a plus-170ish return on money-line wagers. Speaking of money-line hits, how about the Mean Green of North Texas last night, winning by double digits (20-10) at Ball St. as more than a two-TD 'dog to hook up money-line backers with a tasty plus-500 payout (risk $100 to win $500). Raise your hand if you money-lined North Texas? Liar! Back to Nigel from Va. Beach (you don't fight dogs, do ya?), Navy lost a bunch but Ohio St. rarely covers big numbers (think early-season non-covers against Ohio and Troy last year). Nevertheless, I'm passing although would probably go Navy if I had a gun to my head (fortunately, I don't). San Jose St.? No thanks, only thing I'm looking at in this game is how QB Matt Barkley looks from a composure/leadership standpoint. Big challenge for he and the Trojans at the 'Shoe next week, although USC just about always deals out pimpslap treatment when it goes east. Think at Nebraska, at Arkansas, at Auburn and at Virginia in recent years. 50-spots and assbeatings, that's usually how USC rolls... Q: danny (clt) hey brian, i was looking at a few games mainly the blow outs. what do you think of ohio st -22, penn st -27, oklamhoma -22, and texas -41.5, and for my underdog nevada +14.5? R: briane Danny, mightaswell just make yourself a 'chalk' sammy. I don't have play on any of the games you mentioned with exception of Nevada -- Vai Taua goes for 100-plus rushing and Kaepernick also goes off. Nevada scores at least 27 (probably more) and that leaves Irish on the hook for a bunch of points. Real high on Wolf Pack. Q: Jason (Little Rock) Brian, happy days are here again!! Whatcha think about Eastern Mich giving 5.5 to Army who is going with the frosh qb behind a line that returns the least amount of starts in CFB? EMU'S offense doesn't look shabby on paper. Also, I'm leaning Kentucky -15 vs. Miami, OH. Thoughts? THANKS FOR BEING HERE--Best of luck this season! R: briane Thank you, Jason. E-Mich and Army not on my radar at all this week. Not in any hurry to lay double-digit number on Kentucky, which got a bad break when All-SEC DE Jeremy Jarmon was ruled ineligible. I need to see it from Hartline before I go throwing my money on the 'Cats laying a big number. Andre Woodson isn't walking on that field Saturday. I do remember several VI 'cappers at the seminar being bullish on UK, though, so don't think of me as trying to talk you off it. I just wanna pass on that game. Again, Hartline needs to show me if and/or how much he's improved from 2008. Q: Sammy in Tampa Hey Brain, Glad football is back in the saddle! Are you ready for the season and do you have any locks for the weekend in college football? I love LSU at -17.5 over Washington and just fired a nickel. Your take on this game. Thank you. R: briane I've got a strong play on the total that's going to be my guarantee for Saturday. As for the side, don't like it either way. I think Washington will be much improved with Jake Locker back under center. Long trip for LSU and (like UK's Hartline), I'm still not sold on QB Jordan Jefferson. He's great with his legs making plays scrambling, but he's far from a polished product dropping back and throwing from the pocket. Q: Larry Portland, OR Your thoughts on Oklahoma at -5 beating up on Georgia tomorrow. the cowboys have a lot of fire power on the offense and playing at home. Is it safe to bet the mortgage payment on this game? Thanks and good luck this weekend! R: briane Mortgage payment on Oklahoma State? I don't see that at all (unless Cox can't dress out). Look at OSU's defense. That unit gave up 42 to Oregon in the bowl game, 61 to Oklahoma in the regular-season finale and 56 to Texas Tech in mid-November. That 'D' has only five starters back and lost second-leading tackler Orie Lemon to an ACL tear this week. Do you think Georgia is going to be intimidated in Stillwater? Please, the Dawgs hung a 52-spot in Baton Rouge last season and is 30-4 (straight up!) in true road games during Mark Richt's tenure. They haven't lost a road game (remember, trips to Jax vs. UF don't count b/c they're neutral-site contests) since 2007 when Tennessee played its best game of the year and beat UGA in Knoxville. Q: BIll You have to bet against Nevada this weekend. I like Notre Dame as farovirte laying 2 TDs in this spot. Thoughts? R: briane You're a Catholic AND a 'chalk' eater. Q: Josh (Arizona) Hi Brian, thanks for being here today. Would like to get your opinion on the following plays: I like Tulsa tonight, also have lean on Georgia +5.5 and Baylor +2.5. Oh my Gosh, is it real? Football season is here to stay. R: briane Josh: LOVE me some football season! Just a lot more to live for this time of year. Link to my Tulsa-Tulane pick and preview is up the page several questions. Wake-Baylor play also in my pick pack, that's the best under-the-radar game of Week 1. Big-time revenge spot for Baylor after losing 41-13 at home to Deacs in LY's opener (however, QB Robert Griffin didn't play until game out of hand). Plenty of Georgia talk in prior questions. Good luck, Josh! Q: birdman3376 Brian, thanks for taking my question. Really like LSU this weekend over a beaten down Washington program even though on the road. Feel like 18 isn't really a whole lot to give up in this match-up. What are your thoughts? R: briane I think Washington has a fresh start and has put the 0-12 debacle in the rearview mirror thanks to the return of Jake Locker and a new regime with Steve Sarkisian taking over. I have a big play on this total that'll be my guarantee for tomorrow night. Won't be playing the side but I would probably actually go with the Huskies (w/ minimal confidence) if I had to pick it. Q: Andy I like Tulsa and the 'over' tonight. Do you have any opinion on the total for the game? Take it easy now Brian R: briane Andy: See above comments/preview/pick link about Tulsa-Tulane please. Q: Kevin ( Lake Tahoe) Brian, I believe Wake Forest is on upset alert. Baylor Bears run away with a win by 7. Line is WF -2.5, your thoughts. Thx R: briane I like both QBs and both coaches, although I give Grobe slight edge over Briles and Giffin the edge over Skinner. Think both squads will be better than expected this season. In fact, if Bears win this game, it will have decent chance to make first bowl game since 1994. Grobe just keeps getting it done w/ inferior talent compared to rest of ACC. Q: Terry (L.A) Minnesota (-7) looks like easy $$$. Am I wrong? Also will Texas cover at -42? I would like to think they won't let up to prove something to the voters this year. R: briane Terry: I gave Minnesota a hard look and my lean is certainly to the Gophers but for some reason, I've been reluctant to pull the trigger. You're probably on the right side w/ Minny, though. Ever since Florida failed to cover -41 vs. Ohio during the Zook Era, I'm almost certain I've never laid that many points again and I'm in no hurry to do so again. In other words, no opinion on Texas. Q: pepino seattle Hi brian do you think USC and Ohio St are going to show much before their game next week? Thinking about Navy and San Diego St as dogs this week. Thanks R: briane Wow! This is the most questions we've had in ages. Already 4:20 and still tons more to get to so stay tuned.... Not against either Navy or San Diego St., I'd probably go that direction too if I had to pick either or both games. For the record, I'm passing on both, though. Brady Hoke had a lot of work to do at San Diego St., but he's hired an outstanding staff (former New Mexico head coach Rocky Long as d-coordinator, former USC and Auburn o-coordinator Al Borges and alum and former Cleveland Brown Brian Sipe as QB coach). Still a year or two away for the Aztecs but I think they could be solid as double-digit 'dogs this year. But I want to see it happen before I'm betting on it. As for Navy, never against fading Ohio St. when it is laying a big number. There are whispers that Jim Tressel is going to "open up the offense" in 2009 but YET AGAIN, let me see it before I believe it. Q: $nashvegas$ Brian, first thanks as always for your time today. Football is finally hear, so glad to have a chance to bounce my plays off you. 2008 was my worst season EVER, I got smoked badly in way to many bad/close beats. With this damn recession kicking everyone's I ASK can we please make some cash kid's? I had the pleasure of nailing three 2-leg parlays last nite, of course I had little riding on them but was still nice to bank a dime. OK Brian 2009 is here HELP! Oh wise one I got several plays could you help me and any of the good folks out there narrow some of these games down to WINNERS! Under in Tulsa, Kentucky, Navy, Under in Tennessee, Wake Forest, Under in Georgia, Usc, Ole Miss, Nevada, under in Rice...there are of course so many games and so many ?'s to be answered. Again thanks for the time Brian, good luck on the season and I hope the books are kinder this year. Smokem if you got em! R: briane Quick break for sports-radio interview in Ft. Myers/Naples but more questions to get to and I won't forget about you NashVegas$$$, back in 10-15 minutes. Tune into the Red Zone on FSR in Southwest Fla. if u wish... Q: pickens how bout them georgia dogs R: briane Gator Bait in late October. Q: Teddyman1972@yahoo.com Brian, what's going on? The under went 4-1 last 5 college games, I am trying to talk myself to bet on the over tonight between Tuland and Tulsa. What do you think? R: briane No opinion on tonight's total, sorry. Q: boca raton Last night was full of dog winners, do you forecast more of the same on Sat or should we expect to see the fav's dominate?? R: briane Back to Nashvegas, I think you've got a few too many games going. Like Nevada pick. Boca: Such a general question, I have no answer. Breaking.....Oregon RB Blount done for the season -- that was a no-brainer. Forgive me for writing late last night that he's be suspended "at least one game, possibly more." I'm a dumbass, should've said that's a year suspension easy, although at the time I didn't realize he punched a teammate, too. Actually, I'm not the dumbass, but Blount sure as hell is! I see Blount's future similar to that of Booby Miles (Friday Night Lights). Q: Brad (Birmingham) Love the under in the Bama/VT game. Arenas in the return game for Bama or Taylor on a bronken play for VT and maybe some points off defense but not near enough to go over. What do you think? R: briane Brad: I haven't pulled trigger on 'under' yet but certainly thinking about it. First team to 21 wins. Looks like a 20-13 type of game to me if not even lower scoring. 'Bama's defense is NASTY and offense will be ball control and low risk which obviously bodes well for 'under.' Q: Robert - Las Vegas How about some of your thoughts on the Nevada-ND matchup. I'm looking at over 61 for sure, but would like to pull trigger on the Pack. sell me either way R: briane My gracious, it's almost 5:00 and I'm still chatting. Love it! (although answers sure to get shorter as I still have columns to write) Buy Nevada with confidence, Robert! Q: Shane (Birmingham) What do you think about the Cuse? I think Minnesota shouldn't be layin 7 on the road. R: briane Lean Minny but I'm passing Q: David NewYork What up Brian, I have two questions. What do you think about Va-tech Bama under. Also, San Jose State covering 33.5 vs USC? R: briane What up, David? (love that recording on FSR's Tony Bruno Show where the Hispanic dude says, "what up, bruno?"). I'm cool w/ 'Bama 'under,' I'll pass on USC-San Jose St. Q: will from reno nevada on the money line against notre dame... what are the chances? R: briane decent, get a small taste but take Wolf Pack for more catching the pts. Q: will from reno nevada on the money line against notre dame... what are the chances? R: briane same as 5 seconds ago... Q: Lou in Fall River Brian, i got killed last night by picking the Ducks. The line went from -6 to -3 on Boise and thought i had the lock of the year by the ducks winning in sweet revenge. Boy was i ever wrong and lost my monthly income on that game. I need to climb out and have a great weekend. Should I start off by taking Nevada +14.5 over overrated ND??? Thank you. R: briane Yes. P.S. - Bad pick on Oregon. Have I never explained the smurf-turf rule to you? Get me an invite to the Rotary Club in Fall River and I'll tell all. Q: Yoni B Took Philly Eagles to win the super Bowl at 12-1 about 3 weeks ago, it's now down to 7-1. Do you like this bet? R: briane Yes, I do. I have Eagles beating Vikes in NFC Championship Game but losing to Pats in Super Bowl. But still love the pick (and I'm on it as well) as we can possibly hedge out if needed or might like Eagles to win Super Bowl by the time January rolls around. Nice play, Yoni B! Q: CJ - Boca Raton, FL Brian - the dog's killed me last night...1st 2 weeks NCAA books putting spreads too high?? NC State blew the game, Ball was a disaster, Utah coasted the 2nd 1/2, and what happened to Troy??? R: briane C.J.: Tell me about Troy. WTF? 31 unanswered. My Trojans let me down. I guess you learned not to mess with the Mean Green? I was all over the South Carolina-NC St. 'under.' Q: Luis I don't have a good feel tonight but if I am playing I am laying 2 TDs with Tulsa. The only issue left is, would you expect a high total for the game? R: briane Luis: All that's left is for you to go buy some pick packs of mine for winners -- galore! Q: Eric NYC Football season is back!!! Thanks for being here! What do you think about the under on Alabama vs Va Tech. I dont see either team moving the ball much and its the season openner so its prolly gonna be a messy game. The Bama QB is unproven. Remember the beat down they got vs Utah in the sugar bowl. The preseason rankings dont mean anything, Like clemson last yr lol . I was thinking Va Tech and the under for a parlay. But my main focus is the under. Thanks for your opinion! R: briane Stick with main focus, 'Bama wins close low-scoring game. Q: Tony (San Jose) What do you think about "The" Ohio State University showing their big guns a week before the USC contest. They are laying 22. Thanks. R: briane Tony: Ohio St. has big guns? I'm a GATOR so I've never been exposed to their "arsenal" of artillery. In my world, we deal "The" Scrub University eye dots and backhands for giggles in title games. Thanks a bunch and thoroughly enoyed an epic chat although it probably set me beer-thirty time back at least an hour on this Friday at the beach (Sea Grove/Seaside area in Fla. panhandle) for Labor Day. That's ok, ladies, I'll be at Bud & Alley's by 11 beach time at the latest so don't fret. In all seriousness, best of luck to everyone on their wagers this weekend -- let's pimpslap the books all weekend long. And last but not least, my best bet of the weekend is going Monday night at the Toilet Bowl in Tally. Don't miss that winner. Over and out.... -Brian Edwards |
