Chat with the Vegas Insider Handicappers at 3:30pm EST. Our guest this week: Brian Edwards
Vegasinsider.com handicappers give you the inside line on the weekends action and their top picks for the week.
Q: Jimmy (San Diego) Hi Brian, I like betting the total (to avoid some crazy juice) in baseball and tonight I really like the under LA-Arizona game. The D-Backs have stayed under by an average of 3.1 runs per game and I see no reason for that to change tonight. Thoughts?
R: briane Good afternoon ladies and gents, glad to be here. With Week 1 lines out for college football and season win totals released, I encourage questions about college football, which is only 41 days away. Of course, we can also talk baseball, Rampage Jackson and/or Brett Favre. Let's do it!
Jimmy: I'm not getting involved with that total. The 'under' has been a money maker for the Dodgers, cashing at a 51-44 overall clip. As for the D-backs, not sure about your stats? I show Arizona with a 48-45 overall record for the 'over,' which has hit in four straight for the D-backs.
Q: Julie (LA) Hi Brian, thanks for being here with us this afternoon. I like to hear your opinion on taking the Angels tonight please. Mike Scioscia’s squad is 37-16 in Lackey’s last 53 starts while the Red Sox are mired in slumps of 3-8 versus the A.L. West. Seems like a solid play if you ask me. Take care now
R: briane Little 'chalky' on the straight price. Not against it going the run-line route for 'plus' money. Red Sox have struggled on the road all year with a 21-29 record.
Q: Tom which nation will win the “Most Gold Medals” at the Beijing Olympics? I thought China would be a lock, considering their improvement in the past few Olympics and home advantage.
R: briane Tom: No clue. I don't even follow the Olympics and certainly don't bet on it (with possible exception of basketball).
Q: Andre Hi Brian, what's going on? Are there any games you like to bet tonight in baseball? Take care man.
R: briane Andre: I have six games in my pick pack for tonight, including this guaranteed play that's a pay-if-it-wins-only selection. I'll share a couple of these during the chat. I'll start with a recommendation on the 'under' in the Braves-Nats matchup. Tim Hudson is 7-1 with a 1.13 career ERA against Washington. The 'under' is an MLB-best 59-36 overall for the Braves. Meanwhile, the Nats have a horrible .239 team batting average.
Q: Jeff My parlay of the night: Boston+Pittsburgh for 2 dimes. Let's do it B.E!
R: briane I'm never against fading Glendon Rusch, who is 2-3 with a 6.25 ERA. With that said, I prefer the 'over' tonight in the Rockies-Pirates game. The 'over' is 59-36 overall for Pittsburgh, which has Ian Snell and his 5.97 ERA on the mound.
Decent odds with Boston, but I've been avoiding the Red Sox on the road all year due to their 21-29 mark.
Quick updates on some injuries: Just got an alert that Jason Giambi won't be in lineup for Yankees tonight, neither will Braves SS Escobar. Xavier Nady not expected to play for Pirates and Upton is 'doubtful' for D-backs.
Q: Moore (Hawaii) College football is around the corner. Noone talks about Hawaii to win it all anymore. How pathetic.
R: briane Moore: There are plenty of good reasons that nobody is talking about Hawaii returning to a BCS game this year. June Jones, Colt Brennan and all three of those outstanding WRs are gone. I have Hawaii going 7-6. The schedule is tough with road games at Florida, at Oregon St., at Fresno St. and at Boise St. Also, Washington St. and Cincy come to the island. Transition/Rebuilding year for the Warriors.
Q: Ian (Kingston) Hi Brian,
What do you think of Florida and the Red Sox @ Angels Over 7.5??
R: briane Slight lean to the Marlins, but Jamie Moyer's 9-0 career record against Florida scared me away.
Q: John Taylor Brian, I am ready to rock'n'roll tonight. Trying to make a case on the Cubs with the best record in the NL and the Braves. Which is the better choice in your opinion?
R: briane I'd stay away from Braves even though Hudson has great career numbers against the Nationals. Even though Washington is the worst team in baseball, it has a 15-5 record when Tim Redding takes the mound. In addition, the Nats are 5-3 against the Braves this season.
Q: Allen (canada) I like Colorado at home tonight (ML-115). Really can't trust Snell in this spot, on a road against a very good team. Your take on this game?
R: briane Allen: I prefer the 'over.' Hard to trust Glendon Rusch.
Q: UGA VII YOu know the Gators can't beat my Dawgs this year -- what r you talkng about???
R: briane UGA VII: I guess you're making reference to my article posted y-day on VI -- 42 Predictions. For starters, let me remind you that the puppies have lost 15 of the last 18 games to the Gators. The pups haven't won back-to-back games against Florida since the '80s. Furthermore, this year's game sets up better for Florida, which faces Kentucky at home the previous week. As for UGA, it has to go to Baton Rouge the prior week. Therefore, the pups will be coming off a physical/emotional battle and will have to travel for a second time in as many weeks.
UGA VII: I'll make the same promise to you that I've made to friends of mine that root for the puppies. If/when you beat us twice in a row, I will quit calling you pups and begin referring to you as Dawgs. But until you win back-to-back against my GATORS, it's still puppies.
Also, just wanted to let anyone who might be interested know that I did a blog installment earlier today if you wanna check it out. I give Stray-Rod some woodshed treatment and call out Hawks ownership (again!).
Q: TIm (Lexington) What do you think about Kentucky +3 at Louisville? ANy locks in WEek 1?
R: briane Tim: Kentucky lost most of its offense so I think the 'Cats will take a step back this year after back-to-back bowl wins. I have UK going 5-7. The defense will be better (Trevard Lindley is one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the nation), but the offense has questions marks at QB and WR. Hard for me to have an opinion on UK until I see QB Curtis Pulley play. Louisville lost Brian Brohm, but Hunter Cantwell has plenty of experience, getting several starts in '06 when Brohm went down with a season-ending injury. I don't have an opinion on this game yet.
I do like a couple of Week 1 games already -- Florida -27, East Carolina +11.5 and Utah +7.
Q: UGA VII YOu know the Gators can't beat my Dawgs this year -- what r you talkng about???
R: briane Allright, folks. I got to all your questions and we're out of time. Enjoyed it as always. Good luck with your bets tonight. Chat soon...
